Tips on Public Speaking: Resultant Words and Phrases
A vocabulary exercise for presentation writing: naming the concrete result the audience will get, not just the journey you're taking them on.

At my last Master Class, I believe I came up with a new phrase: “Resultant Words and Phrases.”
One of the attendees was working on her presentation using my 26-point template… and I noticed something in her choice of words. She would say, “We will take you on a journey.” Or, “You will discover a lot!”
When I asked her to repeat that segment of her speech – these phrases really stuck out in my mind. I felt as if something was missing. I felt as if she was bringing us to the edge but not pushing us over – in a good way! Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. She was not giving us a “resultant word” – a “resultant phrase” at the end of these key sentences.
Borrowing from the dictionary: resultant = occurring or produced as a result or consequence of something; coming from or caused by something else.
This is an interesting tip on public speaking because it makes the speaker drill down to what their audience will experience, what the result will be.
We have to be constantly asking ourselves as we are preparing, writing out our presentation: what is the result my audience will achieve by using my product, my service? Will they experience success? Will they have an easier way of doing a task?
So I asked my client to create a list of resultant words and phrases that her service provides. She started to reel off some ideas: success, easier to sell, have more people see the homes you are listing, make sure you have a paying client in your meeting. I told her this was a good start. Now go home and come up with some more and remember: what is the result your client will have by using your service.
There was a collective “Aha!” from the rest of my Master Class as they quickly started to jot down some of their Resultant Words and Phrases that they could include in their next core message.
I would love to know what you think? What are some of your Resultant Words and Phrases? Let me know what your core message is.
